Product Care
Product Care
1. Cleaning After Use
- Hand Wash Only: Avoid putting the cutting board in the dishwasher, as the heat and water can warp and crack the wood.
- Use Mild Soap and Water: Gently scrub the board with a sponge or cloth using mild dish soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly.
- Avoid Soaking: Do not let the cutting board soak in water, as this can cause the wood to swell, crack, or warp.
- Vinegar Solution: For regular sanitizing, wipe the board with a mixture of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant and helps to kill bacteria.
- Lemon and Salt: Sprinkle coarse salt over the board and rub it with a half-cut lemon. This helps to deodorize and sanitize the board naturally. Rinse with water afterward.
3. Drying
- Air Dry: After washing, pat the board dry with a clean towel and let it air dry completely, standing it on its edge to allow air circulation around all sides. Avoid laying it flat to dry, as moisture can get trapped underneath.
4. Oiling the Board
- Frequency: Oil the cutting board regularly, about once a month or whenever the wood looks dry.
- Use Food-Grade Mineral Oil: Apply a generous amount of food-grade mineral oil, beeswax conditioner, or a specific cutting board oil. Avoid vegetable or olive oils, as they can go rancid. We recommend and use Walrus Oil on all our cutting boards, you can purchase it here
- How to Apply: Use a clean cloth to rub the oil into the wood in the direction of the grain. Let it soak in for a few hours or overnight, then wipe off any excess with a clean cloth.
- Baking Soda Paste: Mix baking soda with water to form a paste and rub it on the stained area. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing off.
- Lemon Juice: Apply lemon juice to the board and let it sit for a few minutes to remove strong odors. Rinse thoroughly with water afterward.
- Separate Boards: Use separate cutting boards for raw meats and other foods (like vegetables and bread) to prevent cross-contamination. This helps to keep your food preparation area safe and hygienic.
- Keep Dry and Upright: Store the cutting board in a dry area, upright, to allow air circulation. Avoid storing it in damp places, as moisture can lead to mold growth.
By following these care instructions, you can ensure that your wooden cutting board remains in good condition and safe for food preparation.
